Filtrona Porous Technologies (formerly Filtrona Fibertec) is a leading manufacturer of bonded fiber custom components used to store and filter fluids in various consumer, medical and industrial products.

Filtrona needed a multimedia, multi-language CD-ROM that could be given to conference delegates and would be playable on their own computers, regardless of operating system. To this end, it was decided that web-based technologies would suit the purpose best, since browsers, Flash and media players have the fewest compatibility issues. This would also allow the browsers’ built-in navigational abilities to make reading and cross-referencing simple. The whole CD needed to be viewable offline, so any plug-ins required to play the media also had to be included on the CD. There was also a requirement that the disc should auto-run and plug-ins auto-install; in essence, anyone with minimal IT knowledge and no internet connectivity should be able to view the entire demonstration on any computer.

The Challenges

As a designer and developer of websites and online applications, the majority of our challenges were deadline-related rather than technical or creative. In the brief time allowed, we had to design a visual interface that was consistent with Filtrona’s branding and look & feel, complete the coding, record vocal narration, test extensively and burn the requisite number of CDs. Testing and re-testing is important enough online, but when using a read-only medium such as CD-ROM, errors can only be corrected by physically re-making every single one, so testing on the range of systems was essential.

The Solution

The majority of the work was done in-house from start to finish, excluding the voiceover narration. The narration was outsourced to professionals after several audition recordings featuring varied accents were provided to the client to choose from. Our designers, programmers and testers integrated the various components and put the job together to meet the requirements and expectations of the client.

The Results

The job was completed on time and was used successfully by Filtrona on the conference circuit. According to Mathew Robida, Marketing Manager of Porous Technologies, “We needed a firm that was flexible to our uniqueness, yet able to creatively capture the ‘ah-ha!’ factor behind our products. Koves Technologies has shown us that they can provide the right mix of energy and creativity necessary to communicate the value of our products to potential customers.”
