Celebrating school music since 1985, Fiesta-Val is as lively, entertaining and vibrant as its name suggests. With events in the USA and Canada, the website is a central means of communicating both the spirit of the festivals and information about events themselves.

Although event details are circulated widely via their brochure, the people behind Fiesta-Val wanted to take advantage of the interactive and updateable qualities of a website to widen the scope of their message to a readership base comprised of public school officials. They also wanted to incorporate a way of accepting online applications that is intuitive and accurate. The latest news and events also needed to be displayed prominently and would have to be uploadable by any member of staff, regardless of web programming experience.

The Challenges

As long as the site reflected the bright and sensational feel of the Fiesta-val mindset, the site was relatively straightforward, using standard techniques and plug-ins.

The Solution

Events listings were stored on an XML-based calendar that allowed users to filter results by course, category and date. Visitors could register for access to a protected area which would let them view separate content and receive alerts; administrators have the power to deny access. To deliver the regular news a scrolling newsboard, updateable easily by staff, was included. We also incorporated the ability to get directions to any venue using a starting address or ZIP code using Google Maps.

The Results

The site is now the place to go for the thousands of people interested in attending or participating in Fiesta-val. The latest information can easily be found through the simple categorization and top menu, and the current brochure can be downloaded as a PDF. The site remains up to date and useful thanks to the simplicity of adding new content by the organizers.
